Theatrical Figure of Jules Perrot

This is a Victorian Staffordshire figure of Jules Perrot playing the role of Albrecht in the London theater performance of Giselle. It is approximately 9 inches tall and is circa 1842-1845.

This figure may be found in Pugh's Staffordshire Portrait Figures book, page 401, figure 134. The figure in the book is poorly colored but this one is very well colored. Pugh describes the play and this figure in depth, and refers to it as being a rare example. There is overall crazing, a miniscule nick on his nose, chip to the rear base and hidden side of column, and some paint flaking.

The price is $95 plus shipping and insurance.

Sam Weller

This is a very fine, early Victorian Staffordshire figure of Sam Weller, a character in Charles Dicken's first novel “The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club”.  The play “The Pickwickian” was produced beginning in 1837 and Sam Weller was Mr. Pickwick’s servant. This fine figure depicts Weller shining a pair of putties which were coverings of the lower legs. It stands about 8” tall and is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, repairs or restorations.

Christ "The Flagellation"

This is a fine Victorian Staffordshire figure of Christ known as "The Flagellation". He stands with hands behind him, backed up to a pillar. Harding Book Two on page 22 says the figure is similar to a bronze sculpture from Louis XIV's collection in the Louvre in Paris.

This figure is painted in the round. It stands 15" tall and is in very good condition with no chips, repairs or restorations. There is a firing crack behind and under each arm, otherwise all is in good order.

Picture

Samson and the Lion

According to Pugh this figure is Samson from the bible in the act of opening a lion's jaw with both hands. However, there is much controversy surrounding his identity as others have called him Van Amburgh, Hercules and Crockett. Circa 1840, it is in good condition with some flaking on his scarf and minuscule flaking on the lion's mane.

Height: 12 3/4 inches
