Sir Charles Napier
Date: Circa 1854
Height: 16 inches
Condition: Excellent condition, an insignificant glaze chip and firing line
Price: $325 plus shipping and insurance
Comments: This figure is usually found fully colored but I believe a white one like this with gilt-script titling to be quite rare. The features of this figure are extremely fine and well-molded.
Provenance: Sticker on the underside from Jacqueline Oosthuizen, a former Chelsea, London antiques dealer.
Reference: Harding Book One, page 90 illustrates a colored Sir Charles Napier figure with gilt script titling, but I am unable to find another white version of this height and with similar titling.

Benjamin Franklin named Washington
Date: Mid-19th Century
Dimensions: 15 3/4 inches high x 7 inches diameter
Price: $950
Comments: The large figure depicts an elegant standing figure with the name "Washington" written in gold enamel around the base. This refers to George Washington, the first President of the United States except the figure is actually of Benjamin Franklin.
According to the entry for a similar figure at the American Philosophical Society, this ceramic figurine is an adaptation of Francois Marie Suzanne's 1793 terracotta statuette of Benjamin Franklin. Suzanne's statuette was frequently reproduced with variations of costume and poses.

Samson and the Lion According to Pugh this figure is Samson from the bible in the act of opening a lion's jaw with both hands. However, there is much controversy surrounding his identity as others have called him Van Amburgh, Hercules and Crockett. Circa 1840, it is in good condition with some flaking on his scarf and minuscule flaking on the lion's mane. Height: 12 3/4 inches Reference: Pugh (later edition), page E421, plate 97, fig 189 Price: $450 plus shipping and insurance Contact: Sheldon Ferber at sheldonferber@verizon.net |
